Mixed Paper
Junk mail, writing paper and faxes, office bond and copier paper,
brochures and flyers, cereal and shoe boxes, and catalogues. (Any 100%
paper item with paper clips, bulldog clips and any plastic covers
removed) - staples okay.
Newspaper
Dry, loose (not bundled) newspaper and newspaper inserts.
Corrugated Cardboard
Typically brown packaging boxes such as moving boxes, appliance boxes,
etc. (they have a rippled layer when looking at the edges).
Magazines
Magazines (loose, not bundled) - staples okay.
Telephone Books
White Pages and Yellow Pages.
Rigid Plastic Bottles and Tubs (#1, #2, #4 and #5 only)
Clean plastic bottles and tubs (and lids) with recycling codes #1, #2,
#4 and #5 only (e.g., bleach bottles, yoghurt tubs and lids, margarine
tubs and lids, dairy product tubs and lids, pop bottles, water bottles,
shampoo bottles, etc.). These codes are molded into the plastic and can
be seen on the bottom of most plastic items within a small triangle -
this code tells us what kind of plastic the item is made from. If there
is no numbered triangle (mobius loop) on the bottom of the bottle or
tub, or if it stamped with a number 3, 6 or 7, then it's not recyclable
(if there is a triangle but no number, it is also non-recyclable on the
North Shore, as we can't tell what kind of plastic it is)!
Tin Cans and Steel
Rinsed
tin (steel) food cans are always accepted. As well, some other small
metal items with non-metal attachments removed (e.g., metal pipe, coat
hangers, metal toasters, etc.) may be accepted at the discretion of the
depot operators. Most other metal items can be recycled across the
street from the recycling depot at the North Shore Transfer Station,
free-of-charge.
Aluminum Cans, Foil and Scrap Aluminum
Aluminum pop and beer cans, clean aluminum foil and some small pieces of scrap aluminum (at the discretion of staff).
Glass Bottles and Jars
Clean, rinsed glass bottles and jars (blue, green, brown and clear glass).
Clothing and Textiles
Any clean, used clothing (must be wearable), clean, quality linens
(towels, sheets, etc.) and clean, used wearable accessories (belts,
hats, shoes, etc.). These items are donated to the Salvation Army.
